Shreve ability to nimbly hop through genres brings a liveliness that this love story that desperately wrong. Van Tassel is a professor of rhetoric at Thrupp College mediocre and a confirmed bachelor when he meets - in no less a blazing fire scenario of a hotel - the arrest of Miss Etna Bliss. Detected directly, he woos her and wins. At least, he persuades her to become his wife. But Van Tassel has not really conquered. Mount Etna keeps her secrets and her feelings for her. The extent of his rejection becomes clear after a couple of kids and ten years of marriage. Then we discover that there is a secret haven for herself all the time. Van Tassel is in turn revealed - through his own pedantic, bloated sentences - something like a monster. The book is cleverly done, watching Etna through Van Tassel's eyes like looking at beautiful bird from a hungry cat vision. But Van Tassel's voice might be able to write well, it's boring and pedantic and sarcastic at times, and in the end we find that we, like Etna, it can not endure his company for another minute. - Claire Dederer - This text refers to the Hardcover edition.
